Living in Glen Eden

 

The door way to the Waitakere Ranges, Glen Eden is unique and the increasingly sought after area gives residents close proximity to the many national parks, native bush walks, waterfalls and world famous West Coast beaches. The original Maori name for the area was Waikomiti. It was later renamed Glen Eden, for the numerous valleys and orchards of the area.

Shopping

Glen Eden village is situated on West Coast Road and also has a small shopping centre in Glen Mall. The village has a Postshop, four major banking institutes, two video outlets, hair salons, medical centre, three chemists and a host takeaway shops and bakeries. A new Glen Eden Super Value Supermarket is scheduled for opening mid November 2011.

Transport

Glen Eden is easily accessible by public transport. Go West Bus services are distinguishable by their bright green and silver buses. The routes service the great West Auckland area. Routes 15F, 154 and 163 travel to Henderson via Glen Eden.

Glen Eden is also on the Auckland Railway Network’s western line. The station house is a local historical landmark. It was restored in 2001 and now houses the local Pumped Café at Platform 7, renowned for its fabulous coffee.

Things to do

Take a drive out to Piha - the popular setting for the reality TV show, Piha Rescue. It’s just a 30 minute drive west of Glen Eden. Close to the beach are the Kitekite Falls not the largest in the area, but extremely breath taking. Swimming is possible all seasons (though only the extremely daring will dive in during Winter) in a pool just above the falls. At the bottom of the falls is a sheltered picnic area very popular during the warmer months.
Tree Adventures at Woodhill Forest is an exciting new outdoor activity that offers an experience unlike anything else. With 9 different courses ranging from 3 to 14 metres above the ground, there’s something for everyone. Each course has a series of fun and challenging activities that wind their way through the treetops, ending with an exhilarating flying fox ride to bring you swiftly back down to earth.

 

Pack a picnic and board the Rainforest Express. Your adventure culminates in a visit to one of West Auckland's hidden treasures - the Upper Nihotupu Dam, where the silence of the bush belies the closeness of the city. After visiting the dam, take a stroll to Seaver's camp, overlooking the Nihotupu Valley and the Manukau Harbour. The train will collect you from camp for the return journey. During the summer months, night trips are available
